Common Use

Cefdinir is in a group of drugs called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by fighting bacteria in your body.

Cefdinir is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, including:

• Acute flare-ups of chronic bronchitis
• Middle ear infections
• Throat and tonsil infections
• Pneumonia
• Sinus infections
• Skin infections

Dosage and Direction

Take Cefdinir exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take larger amounts or use it longer than recommended.

You may take this medication with or without food. For oral suspension (liquid):

1. Shake well before measuring a dose
2. Use a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup
3. Ask your pharmacist for a measuring device if needed

Precautions

Do not take Cefdinir if you are allergic to cefdinir or other cephalosporin antibiotics. Before taking Cefdinir, tell your doctor if you:

• Are allergic to any drugs (especially penicillins)
• Have kidney disease or are on dialysis
• Have a history of intestinal problems like colitis

Your doctor may adjust your dose or perform special tests if you have these conditions.

Contraindications

Cefdinir is not expected to harm an unborn baby, but tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Cefdinir may pass into breast milk, so consult your doctor if breastfeeding.

The Cefdinir suspension contains sucrose. Talk to your doctor before use if you have diabetes.

Possible Side Effects

Serious Side Effects (Seek Immediate Medical Help)

• Hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of face/lips/tongue
• Watery or bloody diarrhea
• Chest pain
• Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms
• Unusual bleeding
• Seizures
• Jaundice (yellowing skin/eyes)
• Severe blistering, peeling skin rash with fever
• Increased thirst, swelling, reduced urination

Less Serious Side Effects

• Digestive issues: constipation, nausea, bloating
• Headache, dizziness
• Muscle stiffness
• Restlessness or hyperactivity
• Dry mouth or unpleasant taste
• Mild skin rash or vaginal discharge
• Diaper rash in infants taking liquid form

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor about all medications you take, especially:

• Probenecid (Benemid)
• Iron-containing vitamin or mineral supplements

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If near your next dose time, skip the missed dose. Never take extra medicine.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention for overdose symptoms:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Stomach pain
• Diarrhea

Storage

• Store capsules at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light
• Refrigerate Cefdinir oral liquid (do not freeze)
• Discard unused medication after 14 days
