Generic Amoxil ( Amoxicillin )

Uses of Amoxil
Amoxil belongs to the aminopenicillin class and is a broad-spectrum antibiotic. It works by blocking the formation of bacterial cell walls, which are essential for bacteria's survival. This action effectively stops the growth of bacteria sensitive to amoxicillin. It is active against bacteria such as H. influenzae, N. gonorrhoeae, E. coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci, and certain Staphylococci strains. However, bacteria that produce penicillinase are resistant to this medication. Amoxil does not affect mycobacteria, mycoplasmas, Rickettsia species, fungi, amoebas, plasmodium, viruses, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or Proteus species (except P. mirabilis).
Dosage and Administration
Take Amoxil strictly according to your doctor's instructions. Inform your doctor if you have allergies to cephalosporins (like Ceclor, Ceftin, Duricef, Keflex), asthma, serious liver or kidney problems, bleeding disorders, mononucleosis, or a history of allergic reactions. Amoxil may be taken with or without food. Chew chewable tablets thoroughly before swallowing, and swallow capsules whole with water.
Precautions
- This medication may reduce the effectiveness of some contraceptive drugs.
- Complete the full prescribed course, even if you start feeling better early, to prevent the growth of resistant bacteria.
- Do not use Amoxil to treat illnesses with similar symptoms caused by other microorganisms.
- Antibiotics like Amoxil can cause diarrhea; report this to your doctor if it occurs.
- If you are breastfeeding, be aware that the medication may pass into your milk and could cause diarrhea in your infant.
- Notify your doctor if you have asthma before using this medication.
Contraindications
Do not use Amoxil if you have a known allergy to amoxicillin or any penicillin-based antibiotic.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects can include allergic reactions such as hives, swelling, and rash. Other possible effects are diarrhea, dizziness, heartburn, insomnia, nausea, itching, vomiting, confusion, abdominal pain, and easy bruising.
Drug Interactions
Amoxicillin generally does not reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills. It can increase the absorption of digoxin and raise the toxicity of methotrexate. Aspirin can slow the excretion of amoxicillin by the kidneys.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose to compensate. Skip the missed dose if it is nearly time for your next one, and continue your regular dosing schedule.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and disturbances in water and electrolyte balance. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if an overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store Amoxil at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F), protecting it from light and moisture.
