Generic Cleocin ( Clindamycin )

Common Uses
Cleocin combats susceptible bacteria by inhibiting the synthesis of vital bacterial proteins through binding to the bacterial ribosome. It shares similar properties with Lincomycin. Lincosamides, including Cleocin, are commonly prescribed for infections caused by staphylococci and streptococci. This medication is also used for protozoal infections such as malaria, and bacterial infections affecting the respiratory tract, skin, soft tissues, bones, joints, and abdominal organs. Cleocin is not effective for treating meningitis.
Dosage and Administration
Administer Cleocin orally four times daily, with or without food, accompanied by a full glass of water. Maintain evenly spaced intervals between doses for optimal effectiveness.
Precautions
Cleocin should be reserved for serious bacterial infections due to its risk of causing pseudomembranous colitis, a severe and potentially fatal intestinal condition. This may develop during treatment or several weeks after completion. If you experience persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain or cramping, or notice blood or mucus in your stool, avoid using anti-diarrheal medications and promptly inform your doctor.
Contraindications
- History of antibiotic-associated colitis
- Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
- Meningitis
- Allergy to Cleocin or Lincomycin
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (consult your doctor)
- Existing diarrhea, liver issues, or gastrointestinal problems
Possible Side Effects
Mild side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or stomach discomfort may occur. If these symptoms persist or worsen, contact your healthcare provider. Seek immediate medical care for serious allergic reactions including hives, itching, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, or swelling of the face or mouth. Also report symptoms like bloody or black stools, reduced urination, severe stomach cramps, unusual vaginal discharge, or yellowing of the skin or eyes.
Drug Interactions
Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, especially erythromycin, kaolin-pectin, or live bacterial vaccines. Cleocin may amplify the effects of certain drugs used during surgery, so it is important to disclose your use of Cleocin if surgery is planned.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, do not double up the next one. Instead, skip the missed dose if it is nearly time for your next scheduled intake, and continue as directed.
Overdose
Overdose of Cleocin can lead to serious complications. If you experience persistent abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, seek immediate medical advice.
Storage
Store Cleocin at room temperature between 15-25°C (59-77°F), away from light, moisture, children, and pets.
