Generic Ilosone ( Erythromycin )

Common Uses
Ilosone belongs to the macrolide antibiotic group, which includes other drugs like Zmax and Biaxin. It is effective against pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Ilosone is prescribed for treating infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract, skin infections, acute pelvic inflammatory disease, erythrasma, gonorrhea, syphilis, listeriosis, and Legionnaires' disease.
Dosage and Administration
The dosage of Ilosone is determined individually based on your age and health condition and must be prescribed by a doctor. Do not use this medication without a prescription. It can be taken with or without food, though taking it on an empty stomach is generally preferred.
Precautions
Inform your healthcare provider about your medical history, especially if you have liver problems or allergies, particularly to medications. Prolonged or repeated use of Ilosone may lead to secondary infections. Use during pregnancy only if the expected benefit outweighs the potential risk. Since small amounts of the drug may pass into breast milk, consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
Contraindications
- Allergy to Ilosone or other macrolides
- Pre-existing liver disease
- Eye conditions such as epithelial herpes simplex keratitis, fungal eye infections, vaccinia, or varicella (ophthalmic)
- Caution advised for use in children
Possible Side Effects
Side effects may include indigestion symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, liver issues, muscle cramps, hallucinations, loss of consciousness, temporary hearing loss, and ventricular tachycardia.
Drug Interactions
Taking Ilosone with cisapride or pimozide can lead to dangerous reactions. It can intensify effects of antiarrhythmic drugs such as Cordarone, Bretylol, Norpace, Tikosyn, Pronestyl, Quinaglute, Quinidex, Quinora, and Betapace. Theophylline can reduce Ilosone blood concentration.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is near the time for your next dose. Do not double up doses.
Overdose
If you experience serious and ongoing symptoms such as liver problems or hearing loss, seek medical help immediately.
Storage
Store Ilosone at room temperature between 15-25°C (59-77°F), protecting it from light and moisture. Keep away from children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
