Generic Levaquin ( Levofloxacin )

Common Uses
Levaquin is part of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic family, which inhibits bacterial growth by blocking DNA replication and repair. Other drugs in this group include Cipro, Noroxin, Floxin, Trovan, and Maxaquin. Levaquin is commonly prescribed for bacterial infections affecting the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder, prostate, and is also used for individuals exposed to anthrax.
Dosage and Directions
Take each dose of Levaquin with a full glass of water, either on an empty stomach or alongside a meal, spaced evenly throughout the day. To reduce the risk of crystal formation in urine, increase your fluid intake while on this medication.
Precautions
Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV rays during treatment. Exercise caution when performing tasks that require alertness and quick responses, such as driving. Inform your healthcare provider if you have any of the following conditions before using Levaquin: kidney or liver disease, myasthenia gravis, joint issues, seizures or epilepsy, diabetes, or low potassium levels (hypokalemia).
Contraindications
Levaquin should not be used by individuals who have a history of allergic reactions to Levaquin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any ingredients in the medication.
Possible Side Effects
- Common: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, constipation
- Less common: insomnia, dizziness, skin rash, gas, upper abdominal pain, itching
- Caution is advised for patients with central nervous system disorders
- Allergic reactions such as hives and anaphylaxis can occur
Drug Interactions
Do not take Levaquin simultaneously with antacids containing magnesium or aluminum (e.g., Tums, Rolaids), the anti-ulcer drug Carafate, or supplements rich in iron or zinc, as they can reduce the antibiotic's effectiveness. Maintain a two-hour gap between these medications and Levaquin. Interactions may also happen with didanosine (Videx). Notify your doctor if you use medications like Theo-Dur, Theolair, Slo-Phyllin, Slo-Bid, Elixophyllin, warfarin/Coumadin, insulin or oral diabetes drugs (Glucotrol, Micronase, Diabeta, Glynase), or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Motrin, Advil, Nuprin, Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox, Orudis KT, Orudis, or Oruvail.
Missed Dose
If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at once to compensate.
Overdose
If you experience severe or persistent symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, or blood in your urine, seek medical attention promptly.
Storage
Store Levaquin at room temperature between 15 and 25°C (59 to 77°F), away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use past the expiration date.
