Generic Zyvox ( Linezolid )

Common Uses
Zyvox is a synthetic antibiotic from the oxazolidinone class, containing linezolid as its active ingredient. It is prescribed for infections caused by bacteria such as Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae (including pneumonia), Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus agalactiae. It is particularly effective against skin infections, including those related to diabetic foot ulcers.
Dosage and Directions
Zyvox is typically taken orally every 12 hours or as advised by your healthcare provider. It is best to take doses at evenly spaced intervals, and it can be taken with or without food. Do not discontinue the medication prematurely, even if symptoms improve, as this may lead to resistant bacteria. If symptoms persist beyond 10 days, consult your doctor.
Precautions
- Lactic acidosis may develop when Zyvox is used for longer than 28 days. Symptoms to watch for include dizziness, weakness, low body temperature, rapid breathing, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, stomach discomfort, and muscle pain.
- Extended use may cause vision problems such as blurred vision or changes in color perception. Contact your physician immediately if you notice any visual changes.
- The liquid form of Zyvox contains phenylalanine, which is hazardous for individuals with phenylketonuria.
- If you are on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), there is a risk of serotonin syndrome, which includes symptoms like drowsiness, euphoria, rapid muscle movements, dizziness, restlessness, sweating, coordination issues, and fever.
- Avoid consuming large amounts of tyramine-rich foods such as aged cheese, fermented meats, red wine, beer, soy sauce, and improperly stored protein foods.
- Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have high blood pressure, blood disorders, allergies, or chronic infections.
Contraindications
Do not use Zyvox if you have a known allergy to oxazolidinone antibiotics.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, headaches, nausea, vomiting, insomnia, and skin rash. More severe symptoms like easy bruising or bleeding, intense dizziness, severe headaches, vision changes, numbness or tingling in limbs, and fever require immediate medical attention.
Drug Interactions
Notify your doctor if you take any of the following: apraclonidine, brimonidine, buspirone, bethanidine, bupropion, carbamazepine, entacapone, dextromethorphan, herbal supplements (such as ma huang), indoramin, papaverine, meperidine, sibutramine, SSRIs (e.g., fluoxetine, citalopram), tolcapone, sympathomimetics (like methylphenidate, ephedrine), tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, doxepin), triptans (sumatriptan, zolmitriptan), other antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, other bone marrow suppressants, MAO inhibitors, cough and cold remedies, and diet aids.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, do not double the next one. Simply skip the missed dose if the next scheduled time is near and continue as usual.
Overdose
Taking too much Zyvox can be harmful. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if an overdose is suspected.
Storage
Store Zyvox at room temperature, between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit).
