Common Uses

Minocycline is a tetracycline antibiotic that works by stopping bacteria from producing proteins necessary for their growth. It is prescribed for various conditions including acne, actinomycosis, bacterial infections, bullous pemphigoid, meningitis, meningococcal pemphigoid, pemphigus, rheumatoid arthritis, rosacea, skin and soft tissue infections, gonorrhea, and chlamydial infections.

Dosage and Directions

Take Minocycline with or without food, accompanied by a large glass of water. Avoid consuming it together with dairy products. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully — do not take more than prescribed or continue treatment longer than recommended. Extended-release tablets should not be crushed, chewed, or broken. If you are using the liquid form, shake it well before each dose and use the provided measuring device for accuracy.

Precautions

This medication is not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under 8 years old, as prolonged use may cause permanent tooth discoloration. Minimize exposure to sunlight or UV rays while on this medication. Avoid taking iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives simultaneously; separate these by at least two hours before or after Minocycline. Exercise caution when performing activities requiring focus, such as driving.

Do not use Minocycline if you are allergic to it or other tetracycline antibiotics.

• Difficulty swallowing
• Severe headache, dizziness, blurred vision

• Reduced urination or no urination
• Pale or yellow skin, dark urine
• Confusion or weakness
• Severe upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting
• Fast heartbeat, jaundice
• Easy bruising or bleeding

Drug Interactions

It is recommended to avoid combining tetracycline antibiotics like Minocycline with penicillin, as they can interfere with each other. Minocycline may reduce blood clotting ability when taken with anticoagulants, so dose adjustments may be necessary. Absorption of Minocycline is decreased when taken with antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium, and iron supplements. Combining tetracyclines with methoxyflurane can cause severe kidney damage. Minocycline may also reduce the effectiveness of certain birth control pills.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

If you experience severe or ongoing nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Keep Minocycline at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit), protected from sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
