Common Uses

Sumycin is an antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline class that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It is commonly used to treat respiratory infections caused by Hemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, urinary tract infections, acne, chlamydia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, chancroid, cholera, brucellosis, anthrax, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

Dosage and Directions

Take Sumycin exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Swallow tablets whole with a full glass of water on an empty stomach, ideally two hours before or after eating. Avoid consuming dairy products close to the time of taking Sumycin as they can interfere with absorption. If you are using the suspension form, shake well before each dose and measure using the provided dosing spoon. Continue the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve to ensure the infection is fully cleared.

Precautions

Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV rays while taking this medication, as it can increase skin sensitivity. Tetracyclines bind with calcium in developing bones and teeth, which may cause permanent discoloration of teeth if used during their formation period.

Contraindications

Drug Interactions

Sumycin may reduce the effectiveness of certain hormonal birth control pills. Avoid taking iron supplements, multivitamins, calcium supplements, antacids, or laxatives within two hours before or after taking Sumycin. Since it can suppress intestinal microflora, doses of indirect anticoagulants may need adjustment. Sumycin can also decrease the effectiveness of bactericidal antibiotics like penicillins and cephalosporins, which target bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue as usual. Never take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

If you experience persistent nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or severe allergic reactions, seek immediate medical attention.

Storage

Store Sumycin at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius (59-77 degrees Fahrenheit), protecting it from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
