Generic Zithromax ( Azithromycin )

Common Uses
Zithromax is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic related to erythromycin, effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It works by blocking bacterial protein synthesis, which stops the growth and spread of bacteria. Zithromax targets bacteria such as Staphylococcus species, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Escherichia coli, Bordetella, Borrelia burgdorferi, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Chlamydia trachomatis. Laboratory studies also show activity against Legionella pneumophila, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Helicobacter pylori, Toxoplasma gondii, and Ureaplasma urealyticum. This antibiotic is used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, including tonsillitis, otitis, sinusitis, and pneumonia; urogenital infections such as urethritis, prostatitis, cervicitis, and adnexitis caused by chlamydia and gonorrhea; as well as intestinal infections and ulcers in the stomach and duodenum.
Dosage and Administration
Take Zithromax exactly as your doctor prescribes. Do not stop treatment early, even if you feel better, unless directed by your physician. For tablets, swallow with a full glass of water. For suspension, mix one packet with 2 ounces of water, shake well, and drink immediately. Do not use prepared suspension after 12 hours. Tablets and suspension may be taken with or without food, but capsules should be taken on an empty stomach at least two hours before or after meals.
Precautions
The safety of Zithromax during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not fully established. Use this medication during pregnancy or lactation only if the expected benefit justifies any potential risk to the baby.
Contraindications
- Known allergy to Zithromax, azithromycin, erythromycin, or related drugs
Possible Side Effects
Side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, irregular heartbeat, loss of appetite, dark urine, pale stools, jaundice, fever, rash, redness of the skin, and headache. If you experience any severe or concerning symptoms, contact your doctor immediately or seek urgent medical care.
Drug Interactions
Avoid taking Zithromax together with antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, such as Mylanta or Maalox, as these can reduce the absorption of the antibiotic in the gut.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time.
Overdose
Signs of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach discomfort. Seek immediate medical help if you suspect an overdose.
Storage
Keep Zithromax at room temperature between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius (59-77 degrees Fahrenheit), away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children and pets. Do not keep the liquid suspension for more than 10 days.
