Uses of Biaxin

Biaxin is part of the macrolide antibiotic family, which works by blocking bacterial protein production. This effect is usually bacteriostatic, meaning it prevents bacteria from growing, but it can also kill bacteria in some cases. Macrolides accumulate inside white blood cells and are carried directly to infection sites. Biaxin is effective against bacteria like Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium avium, and others. It is commonly prescribed for bacterial infections affecting the skin and respiratory tract, as well as stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori.

Dosage and Administration

Biaxin tablets may be taken with or without food, accompanied by a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole without chewing. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully and do not exceed the prescribed dose. Continue the medication for the entire duration of treatment, even if your symptoms improve. For stomach ulcers, Biaxin treatment may last from one to two weeks or longer.

Precautions

• Do not use Biaxin if you are allergic to erythromycin, clarithromycin, or other related macrolide antibiotics.
• If you have liver or kidney disease, electrolyte imbalances (such as low potassium or magnesium), heart conditions, or irregular heartbeats, consult your doctor before taking this medicine.
• Biaxin is generally not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Contraindications

Biaxin should not be used by patients who have a known allergy to clarithromycin, erythromycin, or any other macrolide antibiotic.

Potential Side Effects

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience allergic reactions like hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing. Other serious symptoms include irregular heartbeats, chest pain, nausea, stomach discomfort, mild fever, or hearing problems.

Drug Interactions

Biaxin may cause dangerous heart rhythm problems when combined with medications such as cisapride, pimozide, or ergot derivatives. Inform your healthcare provider about all medicines you are taking.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, do not double up. Skip the missed dose if it is nearly time for your next one and continue as scheduled.

Overdose Information

Symptoms of overdose can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. If you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor promptly.

Storage Instructions

Store Biaxin at room temperature between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F). Keep it protected from light, moisture, children, and pets.
