Common Uses

Vantin is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic with a broad spectrum of activity and a bactericidal mechanism. It targets many gram-positive bacteria as well as aerobic and anaerobic organisms. This drug resists degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes. However, some bacteria are resistant to Vantin, including D group Streptococcus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium groups J and K, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes, Acinetobacter baumannii, Clostridium difficile, and Bacteroides species. Vantin is commonly prescribed for bacterial infections affecting the upper respiratory tract such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, acute sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, and exacerbations of chronic pneumonia, particularly in smokers, alcohol users, and elderly patients. It is also used prophylactically with other antibiotics during surgical procedures.

Dosage and Administration

Take Vantin with food and a full glass of water. If you are using the suspension form, shake the bottle thoroughly before each dose. You may take it with or without food. Follow the prescribed dosage and duration strictly; do not exceed the recommended amount or stop treatment prematurely, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared.

Precautions

Although Vantin is not expected to harm an unborn child, inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Notify your physician if you have a history of kidney problems, colitis, or other gastrointestinal conditions. Be aware that this medication may cause false-positive results in urine glucose testing.

Contraindications

• Caution advised for individuals with a history of penicillin allergy

Potential Side Effects

Common side effects, besides allergic reactions such as hives, rash, or swelling of the face and tongue, include diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, cough, wheezing, unusual bleeding or bruising, seizures, jaundice, and confusion. Less common effects may include rash, itching, and temporary mild increases in liver enzymes.

Drug Interactions

Medications that block histamine H2 receptors (e.g., ranitidine) and antacids containing aluminum hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate can reduce the effectiveness of Vantin.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and diarrhea. If you experience these or other serious symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Storage

Store Vantin at room temperature, between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius (59-77 degrees Fahrenheit), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. For the liquid suspension, refrigerate and use within 14 days; do not freeze.
