Generic Flagyl ( Metronidazole )

Common Uses
Flagyl is an antibiotic targeting anaerobic bacteria such as Peptostreptococcus, Clostridium species, Bacteroides species, Prevotella, Fusobacterium, Veillonella, and certain parasites including Trichomonas vaginalis (causing vaginal infections), Giardia intestinalis (responsible for intestinal and liver lambliosis), and Entamoeba histolytica. It is prescribed for infections like bacterial peritonitis, liver abscesses, and abscesses affecting the ovaries and Fallopian tubes.
Dosage and Administration
Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dosage based on your specific condition, age, and disease severity. Flagyl can be taken orally with or without food. In hospital settings, intravenous administration may be used for severe infections. Extended-release tablets should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 to 2 hours before or after eating. Do not crush, chew, or break extended-release tablets—swallow them whole. Continue the medication for the full prescribed period, even if symptoms improve, unless advised otherwise by your doctor.
Precautions
Long-term therapy with Flagyl requires regular blood count monitoring. Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment. Flagyl is generally not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, have liver disease, gastrointestinal disorders like Crohn’s disease, blood disorders such as anemia or leukopenia, epilepsy, or any nerve-related conditions.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Flagyl or its components
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects may include nausea, metallic taste, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, dizziness, allergic reactions such as rash or hives, low white blood cell count, and reddish-brown urine in patients on prolonged treatment. Serious adverse effects like seizures or nerve damage causing numbness and tingling in limbs require immediate medical attention.
Drug Interactions
Flagyl is compatible with sulfonamides and many antibiotics but should not be combined with disulfiram, certain blood clotting inhibitors, or specific muscle relaxants. Alcohol is strictly contraindicated during treatment. Flagyl can increase blood lithium levels and should not be co-administered with amprenavir used in HIV therapy.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue as usual. Never take two doses simultaneously.
Overdose
If you experience persistent nausea, vomiting, dizziness, loss of coordination, numbness, tingling, or seizures, seek medical advice promptly.
Storage
Keep Flagyl at room temperature between 15-25°C (59-77°F), protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
