Common Uses

Ceftin is an antibiotic from the cephalosporin class used to treat a variety of bacterial infections including those affecting the sinuses, skin, lungs, urinary tract, ears, and throat. It is also prescribed for conditions like Lyme disease and gonorrhea. The medication works by either killing bacteria or stopping their growth.

Dosage and Directions

For adults, the typical dose ranges from 250 mg to 500 mg taken twice daily.

Children are usually prescribed 10 to 15 mg per kilogram of body weight, also taken twice a day.

Taking Ceftin with food improves absorption into the bloodstream. Remember, this antibiotic is not effective against viral infections such as the common cold or flu.

Precautions

Lesser side effects might include nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, mild diarrhea, cough, headache, irritability, mouth sores, unusual taste, diaper rash in infants, mild itching, or vaginal discharge. If you experience any unusual or severe symptoms, stop using Ceftin and contact your doctor immediately.

Drug Interactions

Ceftin may interact with the following medications:

• Probenecid (Benemid)
• Blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin)
• Medications that reduce stomach acid such as antacids, cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid), omeprazole (Prilosec), ranitidine (Zantac)
• Diuretics including bumetanide (Bumex), furosemide (Lasix), indapamide (Lozol), hydrochlorothiazide, metolazone, spironolactone, torsemide, and others

Not all interactions require stopping a medication, but it is important to consult your healthcare provider about managing potential effects.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Do not double up doses. Resume your normal schedule the next day.

Overdose

Symptoms of an overdose may include seizures, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.

Storage

Store Ceftin at room temperature between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F), protecting it from light and moisture. Keep it away from children and pets. Do not use the medication past its expiration date.
