Common Uses

Trecator-SC is an anti-tuberculosis drug that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby preventing the growth and spread of tuberculosis-causing mycobacteria both inside and outside cells. This medication also boosts the activity of phagocytes at sites of tuberculosis infection, helping to clear the disease. Additionally, Trecator-SC can be prescribed to treat leprosy (Hansen's disease).

Dosage and Instructions

Your healthcare provider will determine the appropriate dose of Trecator-SC based on your individual health status, age, and weight. Take the medication with a large glass of water, either with or without food. Consuming food may help reduce stomach discomfort. Always complete the entire course of treatment even if your symptoms improve, as the infection may still be present. Only stop taking Trecator-SC when directed by your doctor.

Precautions

Before starting Trecator-SC, inform your doctor about any other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are using. Also, notify your physician if you have any allergies, are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Possible Side Effects

In addition to allergic reactions such as hives, rash, or swelling of the face and tongue, Trecator-SC may cause gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and gas. Other possible effects include jaundice, decreased appetite, mouth sores, nerve inflammation, mental confusion, depression, clumsiness, numbness or tingling sensations in the limbs, menstrual irregularities, and impotence. Drug Interactions

Trecator-SC can interact with drugs like cycloserine and isoniazid. Its sedative effects may be enhanced when combined with tranquilizers, sleeping aids, narcotic pain medications, antipsychotics (such as chlorpromazine), certain antidepressants (like amitriptyline), some antihistamines (including diphenhydramine), muscle relaxants, and anti-seizure drugs—especially in patients with neurological or psychiatric conditions. Using Trecator-SC alongside other anti-tuberculosis medications may increase the risk of seizures.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not double doses.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose are not well documented. If you suspect you have taken too much Trecator-SC, seek medical attention promptly.

Storage

Keep Trecator-SC stored at room temperature between 15-25°C (59-77°F), protected from light and moisture. Store it safely out of reach of children and pets.
