Overview of Tinidazole

Tinidazole is a medication with antiprotozoal and antibiotic properties. It is used to treat infections caused by protozoa and certain bacteria, including some sexually transmitted infections. It works by killing sensitive parasites and bacteria to help eliminate the infection.

Dosage and Administration

Take Tinidazole orally with food or milk to reduce stomach upset. Try to take it at the same time each day for best results.

Children (3 years and older)

• Intestinal Amebiasis: 50 mg/kg/day for 3 days (up to 2 g/day)
• Liver Abscess Amebiasis: 50 mg/kg/day for 3–5 days (up to 2 g/day)
• Giardiasis: 50 mg/kg as a single dose (up to 2 g)

Adults

• Intestinal Amebiasis: 2 g/day for 3 days
• Liver Abscess Amebiasis: 2 g/day for 3–5 days
• Bacterial Vaginosis: 2 g/day for 2 days or 1 g/day for 5 days
• Giardiasis: 2 g as a single dose
• Trichomoniasis: 2 g as a single dose. It is important that your sexual partner is treated at the same time to avoid reinfection.

Precautions

• Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 3 days after finishing Tinidazole. Combining alcohol with this medicine can cause nausea, stomach cramps, headaches, and flushing.
• Use with caution if you have a history of seizures, or liver or kidney problems.
• If treated for trichomoniasis, both you and your sexual partner should be treated, even if symptoms are absent.
• Do not use during pregnancy, while trying to become pregnant, or while breastfeeding unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Contraindications

• Do not take if you are allergic to Tinidazole, metronidazole, or any related drugs.
• Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Possible Side Effects

Serious Side Effects

• Severe allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or itching
• Seizures
• Flu-like symptoms with fever, sore throat, and headache
• Numbness, tingling, or burning sensations in hands or feet
• Severe skin reactions with blistering or peeling

Common, Less Serious Side Effects

• Vaginal yeast infections (itching, discharge)
• Unpleasant metallic taste
• Nausea, vomiting, indigestion
• Constipation, diarrhea, stomach cramps
• Dark urine
• Headache, dizziness
• Dry mouth or increased thirst
• Changes in tongue color or mouth sores
• Mild rash or itching

If you experience any side effects, stop taking Tinidazole and contact your doctor immediately. Discuss any unusual symptoms with your healthcare provider.

Drug Interactions

Tinidazole can interact with various medications, including:

• Amiodarone, cimetidine, cholestyramine
• Cyclosporine, tacrolimus, dexamethasone
• Fluorouracil, griseofulvin, lithium
• Rifampin, St. John's wort
• Antibiotics such as azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, ketoconazole
• HIV medications like nevirapine, efavirenz
• Seizure drugs including phenytoin, carbamazepine

Consult your doctor about all medications you take to manage any interactions safely.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the dose to catch up. Resume your regular dosing schedule.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose are not well known. If you suspect an overdose or experience unusual symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Storage

Store Tinidazole at room temperature between 20–25°C (68–77°F). Keep it in a dry place away from light and moisture.
