Uses of Ampicillin

Ampicillin is an aminopenicillin antibiotic with a broad range of action. It works by preventing the formation of bacterial cell walls in bacteria sensitive to it. Stable in the acidic environment of the stomach, Ampicillin is easily absorbed. It targets gram-positive bacteria and several gram-negative species including Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae. It is commonly used to treat infections affecting the respiratory, urinary, and gastrointestinal systems caused by mixed bacterial populations. However, bacteria that produce penicillinase are resistant to Ampicillin.

Dosage and Administration

Follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Ampicillin capsules should be taken with a full glass of water either 30 minutes before or 2 hours after meals.

Precautions

• If you are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, consult your doctor before using Ampicillin.
• This antibiotic may cause diarrhea; inform your doctor before taking any anti-diarrheal medication.
• Ampicillin can produce false positive results in some urine glucose tests.
• Long-term use may lead to reduced effectiveness due to superinfection; contact your healthcare provider if symptoms persist or worsen.

Contraindications

Avoid Ampicillin if you have known hypersensitivity to it. Use caution if you have liver impairment, asthma, or hay fever.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include colitis, diarrhea, fever, itching, nausea, rash, soreness in the mouth or tongue, and vomiting.

Drug Interactions

Ampicillin can increase the effects of oral anticoagulant medications and may reduce the effectiveness of some oral contraceptives.

Missed Dose

Do not double doses. For twice-daily dosing, take the missed dose as soon as you remember, spacing the next dose 5–6 hours later. For thrice-daily dosing, take the missed dose when remembered and the next dose 2–4 hours afterward.

Overdose

If you suspect an overdose or experience allergic symptoms such as hives or rash, seek medical attention immediately.

Storage

Keep Ampicillin at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F), protected from light and moisture.
