Common Use

Clindamycin works against sensitive bacteria by stopping their essential protein production after binding to bacterial ribosomes. This medication has similar properties to Lincomycin.

Lincosamides (including clindamycin) are commonly prescribed for:

• Staphylococcal and streptococcal infections
• Protozoal diseases including malaria
• Infections of the respiratory system
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Bone and joint infections
• Abdominal organ infections

Note: Clindamycin does not treat meningitis.

Dosage and Directions

• Take orally four times daily
• Can be taken with or without food
• Always take with a full glass of water
• Maintain evenly spaced intervals between doses

Precautions

Clindamycin should only be used for serious bacterial infections due to risk of pseudomembranous colitis - a potentially fatal intestinal condition that may occur during or weeks after treatment.

Warning signs requiring immediate medical attention:

• Persistent diarrhea
• Abdominal pain or cramping
• Blood or mucus in stool

Do not use anti-diarrhea medications if these symptoms occur.

Contraindications

Do not take clindamycin if you have:

• Antibiotic-associated colitis
• Crohn's disease
• Ulcerative colitis
• Meningitis
• Allergy to clindamycin or lincomycides

Consult your doctor before use if you:

• Are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Have diarrhea
• Have liver problems
• Have stomach or bowel problems

Possible Side Effects

Common mild effects:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea

• Upset stomach

Seek immediate medical attention for:

• Allergic reactions (hives, itching, breathing difficulty, swelling)
• Bloody or tarry stools
• Decreased urination
• Severe abdominal pain
• Unusual vaginal discharge
• Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes)

Drug Interactions

Important drug interactions to report to your doctor:

• Erythromycin
• Kaolin-pectin
• Live bacterial vaccines

Clindamycin may increase effects of anesthetic drugs - inform surgeons if taking clindamycin before any procedure.

Missed Dose

• Never double your dose
• If near next dose time, skip missed dose
• Maintain regular dosing schedule

Overdose

Symptoms requiring immediate attention:

• Persistent abdominal pain
• Nausea and vomiting
• Diarrhea

Storage

• Store at 59-77°F (15-25°C)
• Keep away from light and moisture
• Keep out of reach of children and pets
