Generic Ciprofloxacin + Dexamethasone ( Ciprofloxacin/Dexamethasone )

Common Use
This combination is widely used as otic (ear) drops to treat outer ear infections (otitis externa) and middle ear infections (otitis media) with ear tubes. Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, works by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis. Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, helps reduce inflammation, swelling, and itching in the ear.
Dosage and Direction
The typical dosage is 4 drops into the affected ear(s) twice daily for 7 days, or as prescribed by a doctor. Before application, warm the bottle in your hands and shake it well. The patient should lie on their side, and the drops should remain in the ear for several minutes. Avoid inserting anything into the ear canal after use.
Precautions
- Use only in the ear—avoid contact with eyes or ingestion.
- Inform your doctor if you have a ruptured eardrum, fungal ear infection, or allergies to quinolones or steroids.
- Prevent reinfection by avoiding contact with contaminated surfaces.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin, dexamethasone, or other quinolone or corticosteroid medications. It should not be used if the eardrum is perforated unless advised by a healthcare professional.
Possible Side Effects
- Common side effects include ear discomfort, itching, and mild irritation.
- Rarely, allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, dizziness, or hearing changes may occur.
- Discontinue use and seek medical help if severe side effects appear.
Drug Interaction
Since this is a topical (otic) medication, systemic interactions are minimal. However, inform your doctor if you are using other ear medications or have undergone long-term steroid therapy.
Missed Dose
If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as remembered. If it’s close to the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with ear drops, but excessive use may cause local irritation or steroid-related side effects with prolonged use. Seek medical advice if large amounts are accidentally ingested.
Storage
- Store the bottle at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
- Do not freeze the medication.
- Keep the cap tightly closed and out of reach of children.
