Generic Keftab ( Cephalexin )

Common Uses
Keftab is a cephalosporin antibiotic designed to eliminate or inhibit the growth of certain bacteria within the body. This medication treats a variety of bacterial infections, including those affecting the upper respiratory tract, ears, skin, and urinary system. It is ineffective against viral illnesses such as the common cold or flu.
Dosage and Directions
Take Keftab exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not increase the dose or extend the treatment period beyond what is prescribed. Follow your prescription instructions carefully. Swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water. For dispersible tablets, dissolve one tablet in approximately 2 teaspoons of water, stir well, and drink immediately. To ensure the full dose is taken, add a little more water to the same glass, swirl gently, and drink promptly. Do not chew or swallow dispersible tablets without dissolving. Complete the entire course of treatment even if symptoms improve early. Inform any healthcare professional treating you that you are taking Keftab, as it may affect certain medical test results.
Precautions
- Do not use Keftab if you are allergic to cephalexin or related cephalosporin antibiotics such as Ceclor, Ceftin, Cefzil, Duricef, Fortaz, Omnicef, Spectracef, or Suprax.
- Inform your doctor if you have allergies to other medications, especially penicillins.
- Disclose any history of kidney or liver disease, gastrointestinal disorders like colitis, diabetes, or malnutrition before starting Keftab.
Contraindications
Keftab should not be used if you have allergies to cephalexin, similar antibiotics, penicillins, or if you have certain medical conditions such as kidney or liver disease, colitis, diabetes, malnutrition, or if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Possible Side Effects
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience allergic reactions including hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice watery or bloody diarrhea, seizures, severe skin rash with blistering or peeling, pale or yellow skin, dark urine, confusion, weakness, unusual bruising or bleeding, hallucinations, agitation, or decreased urination.
Milder side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, joint pain, or vaginal itching or discharge.
Drug Interactions
- Inform your healthcare provider if you are taking blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin), diabetes medications such as metformin, or probenecid (Benemid).
- Disclose all other medications including prescription, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements.
- Do not start any new medicines without consulting your doctor.
Missed Dose
If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If the next dose is near, skip the missed one and resume your regular schedule. Do not take double doses.
Overdose
If you suspect an overdose, seek emergency medical care immediately. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or blood in the urine.
