Common Uses

Doxycycline is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline family. It is commonly prescribed to treat a variety of bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, periodontitis, and skin conditions such as rosacea-related bumps and lesions.

Dosage and Administration

This medicine should be taken with food along with a full glass of water to help minimize esophageal irritation. The daily dose can be taken either all at once or split into two doses spaced 12 hours apart. Do not exceed the prescribed amount or extend treatment beyond the recommended period. Some brands should not be combined with dairy products. Capsules designed for delayed release must be swallowed whole without crushing or chewing. For oral suspensions, shake well and use a proper measuring device. Avoid using expired medication as it can harm your kidneys.

Precautions

Doxycycline may cause permanent discoloration of teeth if used during tooth development. It should only be used for infections caused by bacteria proven to be sensitive to it, such as staphylococcus, Escherichia, and Shigella species. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight or UV rays during treatment and for 4-5 days afterward. Long-term treatment requires regular blood tests to monitor blood cells, liver function, and kidney health.

Possible Side Effects

Some side effects may include headache, dizziness, blurred vision, fever, chills, muscle aches, skin rash, jaundice, pale or yellow skin, dark urine, upper abdominal pain, loss of appetite, and easy bruising or bleeding. If you experience any severe symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Drug Interactions

Doxycycline’s absorption may be reduced if taken with antacids containing aluminum, magnesium, or calcium. Minerals like calcium and iron, as well as bismuth subsalicylate, can also interfere with its effectiveness. This antibiotic may increase the effects of blood thinners such as warfarin. Additionally, medications like phenytoin, carbamazepine, and barbiturates might speed up doxycycline metabolism.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, do not double the next one. Simply skip the missed dose if it’s nearly time for your next scheduled dose and continue as normal.

Overdose

In case of significant nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea that persists, seek medical advice promptly.

Storage

Keep doxycycline at room temperature, between 15-25°C (59-77°F), away from moisture, light, children, and pets. Do not use the medicine past its expiration date.
